Shadow work

Some example of shadow work embroidery in my stash.

its important to show the front and back...love the little 'Vs' on the border of this organdy cloth (unfortunately rather stained with some color bleed).

this delicate hankie is a fine cotton lawn

you have to use a transparent or semi transparent fabric

does any one do this kind of fine work anymore? I know there are some fantastic embroiderers out there in blogland.

don't you love the sweet French knots...

Etsy news

Still trying to get the hang of this Craftcult widget. Its like buying a pig in a poke.

notice my pretty scarf, bottom right.

  1. Thanx for stopping by at my blog!

Wow that sure is a collection and a half!!

  2. Wow, thats a coincidence!
Isnt Kingsgate near Palm Bay? That is where my mum lives.

We moved to Whitstable about 6 years ago and love it.

When did you move to Canada and why........if you don't mind me asking. Mind you I dont blame you - we went before we were married and loved it and actually met a couple who were out there because they wanted to emigrate to Canada like their Uncle had!

  3. Can't believe that......what a small world!
We have walked past the Captain Digby many a time! Never stopped there though!
How often do you come over to visit your sister then?
Did you adjust well to Canada or did you miss your family and friends?
Not something I think I could actually do............only dream about!
I will add you to my blog read list so we can keep in touch!

  4. My mom loves that kind of items. I know in Bolivia there are some nuns who still do that type of Embroidery by hand...or at least they used to like 10 years ago. It's a lot of work!

  5. That embroidery is exquisite you just don't get the same effect now with all the machine embroidery

  6. The embroidery is beautiful, I'm sure some people must still do that type of work! :) x

  7. More beautiful hankies Jan. I absolutely adore the blue one. I do a little bit of shadow work, and have some lovely white cotton organdy waiting for a project that just keeps getting put off!! Thank you so much for sharing your lovely textiles.

  8. Just beautiful handwork, Jan. I'm sure there are many Europeans that so that fine and precise work.

Did you get all of your Etsy woes figured out?

Oh, are you reading anything exciting? I've just started The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Invention of Murder---pretty good, so far.
